3terms of language, culture, customs and manners, values and history. Even among Japanese people, we encounter differences from person to person, in their individual character and ways of thinking. Looking ahead, JCFL will continue to contribute to our globalizing society by instilling a wide perspective in our students, along with the ability to understand and embrace such diversity. To that end JCFL emphasizes the importance of studying both humanities and sciences, as well as three types of communication: first, global communication through English and other languages; second, business communication including business manners and the correct use of honorific language appropriate to working adults; and third, digital communication literacy in the rapidly growing fields of ICT and AI, as exemplified by our new subject, Digital Communication Skills, which will be available to all students.Moving toward the future, JCFL will persist in improving its education in accordance with its core principles – a holistic development of the whole person, the cultivation of students’ thinking skills and the development of an independent mind. To all of the matriculating students, I wish you brilliant success and a stellar experience during your time with us here at JCFL.Japan College of Foreign Languages was established in 1970 ( then called the Tokyo Institute of Intercultural Communication) as a pioneer in the field of interpreter and tourist-guide training. This year we celebrate our 55th anniversary. We have now grown into a vocational college for higher education with 11 departments offering 34 courses. Throughout the years JCFL has benefited from the support, advice and cooperation given by numerous higher education institutes, high schools, government offices as well as the agencies, groups and associations to which it belongs, both within Japan and overseas. I would like to take this opportunity to offer them all my warmest thanks, and hope to have their continued support and advice.JCFL owes its success to the dedication and efforts made by our administration, teachers, board members and advisors. In addition, it would not advance without the achievements of our graduates and the sincere trust given by our associates in business and industry. For more than 50 years, as JCFL has been growing, relations between Japan and the rest of the world have been drawing closer, with such words as ‘internationalization’ becoming common currency. Nonetheless, there remain problems which need to be solved. There are, of course, differences between countries, races, and regions in Japan College of Foreign LanguagesChairperson of the Board President ISE, Yoji Beyond Our 55th Anniversary, From this Generation to the Next創立55周年、さらにその先へ時代を超えて、次代につなぐ。
